The CNS

Rear Admiral Peter Kofi Faidoo was born on 20 March 1959 in Takoradi. He attended Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) Takoradi, where he obtained his GCE “O” level. He then proceeded to St. John’s Secondary School, Sekondi, where he obtained his GCE “A” level in 1979. he was enlisted into the Ghana Military Academy as a Naval Cadet in 7 January 1980 and graduated on 31 July 1981 as the Best Naval Cadet. He then proceeded to the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, UK where he again emerged the Best International Student.

From 1984 to 1985, he pursued the International Sub Lieutenant Course at Venduruthy, Cochin in India.  Upon his return and a short stint on GNS Achimota as Watch Keeping Officer, he was appointed Flag Lieutenant to the Chief of Naval Staff from December 1985 to June 1988. He then joined GNS Dzata then on refit in Newcastle, UK, as a Navigating Officer and successfully planned and executed the passage from UK to Ghana.

Rear Admiral Faidoo was subsequently appointed Executive Officer, GNS Dzata. His other sea tours include Commanding Officer, GNS Sebo, where as part of the ECOMOG Naval Task Force, his ship, almost single handedly foiled the rebel invasion of Freetown Harbour from 6 to 11 January 1989. He was awarded a medal for leadership in action and made an honourary citizen of Sierra Leone. Rear Admiral Faidoo has also commanded GNS Achimota and GNS Yogaga at various times in his naval career.

Apart from his participation in ECOMOG as Commanding Officer at various times with GNS Sebo, Achimota and Yogaga, he also once served in the ECOMOG operations as the Naval Liaison Officer on MV Volta River, MV Tano River and MV Sisili River for evacuation of Ghanaian and other ECOWAS citizens from the war-torn countries of both Liberia and Sierra Leone. He has also participated in the UN Mission in Eastern Slavonia (UNTAES, in Croatia), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).

His shore tours include: Base Training Officer, NB Tema, Base Operations Officer, NB Tema, Deputy Director Naval Administration, Naval Secretary, Director Naval  Administration and Director Naval Operations, all at the Naval Headquarters. Subsequently he was also appointed the National Maritime Security Coordinator while on secondment to the Ghana Maritime Authority.

Upon his promotion to the Flag Rank of Commodore in 2012, he was appointed Director General (Training) at the General Headquarters. Prior to assuming office as Chief of the Naval Staff he was Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, from August 2015 to 4 January 2016 when he was appointed Chief of the Naval Staff.  He was subsequently promoted  to Rear Admiral on 12 January 2016.

Rear Admiral Faidoo holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He is also an Alumnus of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College where he undertook both the Junior and Senior Staff Courses. He is also an Alumnus of the United States Naval War College, where he again undertook both the Naval Staff Course and the Naval Command Course (War College). He is a proud recipient of the coveted and prestigious “James Forrestal Award for Force Planning” from the US Naval War College. He is also currently studying for a degree in law (LLB) at the Mountcrest University College, Accra.

He is married to Mrs Paulina Faidoo, and has two daughters. His hobbies include reading, recreational running, and swimming.
